2016 Specialized Crave Comp 29

What do you crave? Tacky singletrack and hero dirt beneath dripping coastal redwoods? Loose, sandy gnar with drifty turns through every corner? Whatever your passion, Specialized's Crave Comp 29 has the goods to satisfy your needs. Built around an M4 aluminum frame and RockShox Recon fork, the Crave Comp 29 is an XC demon. Light, stiff, efficient; all words that add up to "fast." Big 29-inch wheels with Specialized rubber are the ticket to traction and handling, while Shimano Deore brakes offer no-fuss dependability no matter the trail conditions. The SRAM/Shimano 2x10 drivetrain has the legs to power over the climbs, rail the descents, and hammer all the way back to the parking lot. When you crave it all, the Crave Comp 29 handles it all.

      Best Uses

Whether you are a racer on a budget or just an enthuiest who likes to ride some local trails but want the best bike (weight and componentry wise) without busting the bank, then the Crave is your bike. This bike allows me to bike like I never could on cheaper, heavier & clunkier bikes.

Fun bike, but problem with rear hub

        By renewbie

        About Me

I recently got back into the sport after being away for 19 years. I wanted something well equipped but wouldn't break the bank, and the 2014 Crave Comp fit that bill for me. I've taken the bike on three different single-tracks totaling 20-25 miles, and about 30 miles of paved riding. It has been a lot of fun! --BUT-- After the first 10 miles of paved riding I started hearing noise coming from the rear hub area. I took it to my local bike shop and they said all sounded normal, but bring it back if what I hear gets louder. After about 15 miles of single-track and another 10 of paved riding I brought it in for derailleur adjustments and again to have them listen to the noise from the rear hub. Again, they couldn't hear anything wrong. Finally today after some more single-track and paved trails I brought it back to them with a noticeably louder noise and they finally could hear what I was telling them I heard. There has been a sort of grinding sound coming from the rear hub area that is only noticeable when you are coasting or pedaling backwards. It isn't the normal free-wheel "clicking" sound, it is something else. So far that has been the only issue with this bike and other than that, the bike has been great. It is quick, fairly light weight, handles pretty well for this newbie. I just find it unacceptable for a component such as the hub or freewheel or whatever it is, to fail after only 10 miles of riding, and isn’t the quality I expect from Specialized.

The bike overall has an awesome feel with steering being very responsive and clean. The gearing is really good for both uphill and downhill trekking. And the RockShox also have a very good feel which are very easy on the wrists.

I love my Crave Comp. Bought it five weeks ago and could not be happier. Geometry is awesome. Rides super light uphill. Components are solid at this price point and Shimano brakes are a step up from last year's model.

        About Me

After 16 years with my previous bike it was time to put it into retirement. I was very hesitant to purchase a new bike and was definitely looking for the best bike I could get with a restricted budget. After researching for a few months my local dealer recommended that I take a look at the new 14' Crave Comp 29. At long last I found the bike which not only fit my budget, but also had a great set of components for the money. This bike has improved my climbing speed and allowed me to navigate obstacles my 26er would never allow. I am very happy that Specialized still builds a bike for the common rider who demands excellence in their bike performance. I am looking forward to many years of enjoyment from this great bike.
